Is it worth getting assessed for ADHD? This is a question which we get asked a great deal here at the Neurodevelopmental Consultants Clinic.  Understandably, individuals, parents and carers can often feel overwhelmed at the idea of accessing an assessment. Both for themselves or their child and it is not always clear what the benefits might be versus the costs.  Ultimately, the decision to begin the journey towards a diagnosis is a personal one and it requires careful consideration.  Below we answer the most common questions that individuals, parents and carers bring to us when considering whether to begin the assessment process.

Wont an ADHD diagnosis be stigmatising?

Unfortunately, historically there seemed to be a misconception that ADHD was for ‘naughty boys’.  Not only are such labels unhelpful, but they are also very inaccurate.  Fortunately, society has moved on and there is a greater acceptance and understanding of people with neurodiversity.  There is still work to do, but schools and employers are now much better informed and equipped to support people with neurodiversity.  There is also a greater recognition of the strengths and unique contributions that people with ADHD and neurodiversity more generally can bring.

An ADHD diagnosis won’t change anything though, will it?

A diagnosis of ADHD can help schools, educational establishments and employers know how to best help someone.  A diagnosis can also bring protections in law (Equality Act 2010).  Of course, where ADHD is concerned, a diagnosis can also bring access to medication, which can help improve a person’s concentration and productivity.  Finally, a diagnosis can help a person to understand why they might have struggled throughout their life.  In turn, this can help challenge unhelpful narratives that might have developed around a person.

Is an ADHD assessment worth the cost though?

We would always recommend that you first speak to your GP, to see if it is possible to get a referral to your local NHS service or a right to choose provider.  Unfortunately, many NHS and right to choose providers either have very long waiting lists or are no longer accepting referrals.  In this event, you might wish to consider paying for an assessment from a private provider.  Deciding whether to pay for a private assessment is a very personal decision which will be influenced by a person’s circumstances.

Here at the Neurodevelopmental Consultant’s Clinic, we can offer consultant led NHS standard ADHD assessments without the wait. For more information, visit our website www.ndcclinic.com
