Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder. This means that it is a condition that begins in childhood (before the age of 12) and progresses into adulthood and which involves the development of the brain.  Essentially, it is a condition which involves pervasive and persistent problems with inattention which causes interference in daily life. People with ADHD will also present with high levels of impulsivity and hyperactivity, which will again present difficulties in their daily life.

What about ADD then?

At the centre of this condition is inattention.  Whilst people with ADHD will also present with high levels of impulsivity and hyperactivity, for a small number of people they will only experience problems with inattention.  This is called Attention Deficit Disorder.

What causes ADHD/ADD?

We don’t know the exact causes, but there are some factors which seem to make it more likely to occur. Examples include low birth weight/premature birth, exposure to toxins in the prenatal period and early psychosocial stressors.  There is also an increased incidence when a person has a family history of ADHD.

How common is ADHD/ADD?

Global estimates vary but in the UK it is believed that 5% of children will have the condition. In adults it is believed that 3-4% of the population will meet the criteria.

Wait, so that means you can grow out of ADHD?

It is surprising, but the evidence does suggest that a small number of children with ADHD will have symptoms which get slightly better, or which fully resolve overtime.

What’s the point of getting a diagnosis then?

Well, for some people it can just be really helpful to understand the reason why they might have struggled in different areas throughout their life.  For others, they might wish to consider taking medication to control their symptoms. A diagnosis might also help to identify the most appropriate forms of non medical intervention (such as talking therapies).

OK, I’m sold! How do I get myself or my child an assessment?

You might want to first try seeking a referral to your local NHS service via your GP.  Unfortunately, many areas have long waiting lists and so some people consider using a private provider. Here at the Neurodevelopmental Consultants Clinic we can provide NHS standard assessments without delay.
